According to the BBC, the Nepalese government plans to use findings from World Weather Attribution as key evidence in its application to the UN Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage, which supports countries affected by climate-related disasters.

According to official data, around 1,400 people were killed in the disaster, while more than 6,000 remain missing.
Researchers from World Weather Attribution said the floods and landslides followed a collapse of rock and glacier ice near Langtang Lirung in the Himalayas, affecting communities along the Nepal-Tibet border.

According to the study, the disaster was caused by a combination of rising temperatures, thinning glaciers, thawing permafrost and existing geological weaknesses.

The report found that temperatures in the region during July and August were around 1.5°C higher due to human influence on the climate.

According to scientists involved in the research, climate change was not the only cause of the disaster but acted as a destabilising factor in an already vulnerable mountain environment.
Nepali authorities say the study will strengthen the country’s case for international financial assistance. According to government estimates, Nepal may require around $5 billion for reconstruction and recovery.

Officials are also preparing satellite images, drone footage and preliminary damage assessments to support the funding request.

According to Nepalese authorities, the country contributes relatively little to global greenhouse gas emissions but remains highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, including glacier melt, floods and landslides.

Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah is also expected to raise the recent disaster and the issue of climate justice at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
